The architect and designer Louis Kalff (1897-1976) joined Philips in 1925.
In 1946 he was appointed as Philips’ chief designer and head of the lighting division.
In this position he designed a large number of lighting fixtures.

The design of this lamp seems to predict the shape of Louis Kalff’s architectural masterpiece: the Philips exhibition centre ‘Evoluon’ which was realized in Eindhoven in 1966.
